The Heart of Mallorca's Pottery

Pòrtol & The Red Clay

Our studio is based in Pòrtol, a small village in Marratxí with a history deeply tied to clay. This corner of the island is home to a particularly iron-rich clay, a mineral that gives each piece remarkable resistance to direct flame and a distinctive colour. From this red earth come olles and greixoneres—cooking pots prized throughout the island for being able to go straight onto an open fire.

Over generations, this unassuming corner has given rise to a thriving community of potters, becoming the true heartland of traditional Mallorcan ceramics. Water, earth and fire: a tradition that still lives in our hands today, and one we now share with you.

THE HANDS BEHIND

A Family Legacy

Hola, I'm Joan, the hands behind Pòrtol Pots. My earliest memories of working with clay are from Esperança's workshop — mestra artesana, and also my mother — where I learned the craft through play. I feel incredibly lucky to carry on this art as the fifth generation of my family to do so.

After a few years studying at Barcelona's school of design, I returned to Pòrtol to continue the tradition from a new perspective.

At our studio, we're driven by one purpose: to share what we know and guide anyone who wants to learn and create with clay, with patience and care. For us, ceramics is simply a way of life: working with our hands, enjoying the process.

Whether you've never touched clay before or you're looking to sharpen your skills, we — Pepa the studio cat included — are here to support you step by step, in a relaxed and welcoming space.

We look forward to seeing you!
